It all started with them. The legendary Air Jordan I is the beginning of a world-renowned shoe line and a new culture in the world of sneakers.
Air Jordan I
Nike has always strived for market leadership from the very beginning of its work. The brand is known not only for using the most advanced technologies in the production of its outfits, but also for unconventional solutions in the field of promotion. An example of such work of Nike is the Air Jordan line, which appeared together with the rise of star Michael Jordan and became a truly new era in the history of basketball sneakers development.
Today it would seem funny, but here’s what Jordan said when the brand offered him a meeting, “I don’t want to go to a meeting with Nike, I don’t know the company. I don’t think I’m going to like them.” In the end, Jordan’s parents still insisted he meet with company founder Phil Knight.
When Jordan first saw black and red basketball sneakers, he declared: “I will not wear these shoes – they are the devil’s colors!”. However, the desire of Phil Knight and Nike to cooperate with a rising star was so great that they made every effort to attract a basketball player, and offered him a contract that was an order of magnitude more favorable than the proposals of other manufacturers. In the 1985 season, Michael Jordan took to the court exactly in the “devil” sneakers.
Many Nike fans associate the “Air Jordan” model with the name Tinker Hatfield, although the designer of the Air Jordan I was a different person, Peter Moore. The first Air Jordan was similar in design to other popular Nike models released in the 1980s, such as the Air Force I (1982), Terminator (1984), and Dunk (1985). The sides of the sneaker featured a large “swoosh” and the new Wings logo. The model was equipped with Nike Air technology for heel cushioning.
The Air Jordan I turned the world of basketball sneakers upside down. They filled the world with color in the truest sense of the word. At that time, players had to go on the court only in solid white sneakers, and so every game during which Michael played in black and red “jordans”, he was fined $5,000. And so every game for the entire 1985 season! “Devilish” were not only the colors of sneakers, but also the performance of the player himself. Michael loudly declared himself in the league, was awarded the status of the best rookie of the season, took part in the NBA All-Star Game, demonstrated incredible performance on the results of their games – in short, exploded the world of basketball. The popularity of Jordan and his sneakers grew with cosmic speed.
Since then, people have had a different perception of athletic shoes. Not surprisingly, the Air Jordan I, which cost $65 at the time and became the most expensive basketball sneakers on the market, nevertheless enjoyed raving popularity.
